The journey has begun! I think it may be officially day 2 actually...if you count the entire day that I spent in my layover in Schipol Airport, Holland. I arrived at 7:40 in the morning and was supposed to fly out at 8:50 (we actually flew out at about 9:30, which isn't too bad of a delay but when you have been waiting already for hours and hours...UGH).´
Getting off the plane I slowly sauntered to the customs and sauntered to baggage claim (trying to kill minutes) and then, although I was in no hurry to get my bags, stood and waited for 30 minutes, getting increasingly anxious about my bag. Luckily it finally came - the second last bag on the belt!!! Phew - close one!
Speaking of the luggage belt - there was an amazing suitcase that kept circling by that was bright red with a big long crocodile tail sticking out of one side. It even looked like it was moving a little. On the top of the bag there was a big sticker that said ''ANYTHING TO DECLARE? Go to such and such place..'' It was quite clever!
I decided that waiting in one place for over 12 hours would be mildly torturous so I instead stuck my bags in a day locker and hoped on a train to Amsterdam central station. That at least broke the day up a bit with some time outside in the fresh air. I watched buskers, had lunch, and sat in a big square reading my book and people watching. One of the people I watched was actually a little person - a boy about 5 years. He looked like a sweetheart running amongst all the pigeons and laughing with delight, and then his evil twin took over and began trying to kick the pigeons like footballs. Thank godness the pigeons in Amsterdam can recognize a leg being wound up in anticipation of a kick and every one of them managed to jump away and avoid his little feet!! People are so interesting :)
This man was amazing!!! He was sort of drumming bit it was more like strumming this instrument. It looked a bit like an upside down wok! Very very cool!
Back at the airport in the afternoon I got increasingly frustrated with waiting and having nothing constructive to do. I did get up and walk around to look for an afternoon snack. I found a place that sold fries. Just fries - smothered in mayo. Gotta say, I never knew the Dutch were really in to french fries! Nice to know...
Now I am actually in Denmark. The first official stop of my trip! I have a very comfy mattress on my cousins floor and a great big sink to wash my hair in (for those who don't know, my cousin has no shower in his apartment).
Tomorrow starts the errand running and the planning so that I make sure I see everyone before I am off again next week!!
It all still feels surreal - I'm not looking forward to when it kicks in :S

A bike's happy place!

Angel getting dressed!
